Thinking About a New Pet?

Choosing and naming our cat, six years ago, was completely out of my hands. The former wasn't difficult for my daughter because, at the time, Meeko was the only kitten available at the OSPCA. As for the name, I suppose it could have been worse.

I've always felt that choosing a pet is all about connecting with the animal -- you just know that this is the one for you (or she's the last of her kind at the shelter). But there is help out there. Here's a site that helps you decide what breed of dog or cat would best suit your family, your home and your lifestyle.

And naming your pet? You could, as my daughter did, go the Disney (Pocahontas) route, but you might also want to check out a list of most popular pet names in the U.S. and Australia.

For me, it's like choosing a mate. When it's the "right" one -- somehow you just know it. Same goes for choosing a name.

I took one look at my little domestic short hair kitty boy when I went out to the North Shore Animal League to adopt -- and said "Patrick." And that was it. Somehow, that name just fit.

I'm with you, Georgie, it's all about the feeling and the fit.

I'd use the list of most popular names to make sure I didn't pick one of those. I want =my= dog to come when I call! :)

So true, NT! Unless you're into that Pied Piper thing -- calling, "Buddy!", and having every pet in the area come to you.

I agree it is like choosing a mate... and loosing them is like loosing a family too. My rabbits who are in their rabbit hutches right now has a very short life span but just right for my kids because their interest tend to change fast.
