Sick People = Sick Dogs

I'd like to think that people are, on the whole, a decent lot, but one only needs to read a newspaper to discover just how screwed up some folks are. In a Toronto off-leash park this past weekend, six dogs were poisoned with anti-freeze. Two are not expected to survive, and the others will most likely suffer lasting kidney damage. Police believe the poisonings may have been perpetrated by someone protesting the city's recent decision to continue allowing a large area of the park to be used specifically for off-leash dogs. They don't hold out much hope of finding the culprit.

On the news last night, one of the owners, while hugging her dying Golden Retriever, was interviewed. It was absolutely crushing to look into the eyes of that beautiful dog -- such sadness and fear.

I can't imagine what kind of sick person would do such a thing. It's bad enough dogs ingested the poison, but that same sweet-tasting anti-freeze is attractive to young children and wildlife. I hope they catch the bastard.

UPDATE: Two of the dogs have died, and many dead raccoons have been found in the park.

It is hard to imagine sharing a planet with anyone so horrible.

Couldn't have put it better myself, Jan. I don't think I will ever forget that dog's face -- the owner is, of course, devastated.

I'll never understand those on "the other side," whether it's pet poisoners, anti-bicycle drivers, militant anti-abortion protesters... well, the list goes on and on. I guess all we can do is seethe inside, knowing with smug satisfaction that the human race continues to improve (albeit much more gradually than we'd like) in spite of such people.

And they'll never understand us, NT.

Common anti-freeze is both tasteless and odorless as well as poisonous. And, it can definitely be served up in a nice pretty dish of LIME flavored Jell-O for the sick *two-legged* puppy who did this.

Just ask me. I've got a nice dollop of Cool Whip just waiting to top it off for the creep.

This incenses me. My dogs and I frequent our local leash-free park (we call it the Bark Park) and have come to know so many of the other owners and dogs there--we're like a family. I can't believe people would do such a thing.

I will share this piece of info and suggest to each pet owner that a quick walk around the perimeter of our small park would turn up any puddles or bowls of such disaster.

So anyway, are you heading my way soon?

Considering that your blog covers everything food related, Georgie, I think you're just the right person for the job. I'm sure many others feel as you do.

Carolyn, I heard that the poison was put into loaves of bread (I'll have to check that info).

I'll be in your neck of the woods this summer. I'll email you.

I know many would feel it's not right, but this is an area where I wish the punishment would fit the crime. Chug-a-lug, loser!

Agreed, t.h.i.t!
